History of Chess
This is not another long page on the history of chess as the topic is so vast and well covered by many other page son the internet.
The aim of this website page is to provide an overview of aspects of the history of chess and we have left the straight historical content to other sources that cover the subject in considerably more depth that we are able to here.
Although the origins of chess pre-date the early middle ages, pictures exist of the Templar Knights playing as early as 1283 and other 13th century exhibits such as displayed here of Noblemen and their servants playing chess (source: Al Andalus. 13th c. Madrid: El Escorial).

The origins of each of the chess pieces resides in the history of the game. We are working on separate pages that cover each of the chess pieces and they will be appearing shortly on this site.
Similarly the terminology and jargon that we take for granted in chess has evolved over time and many of the words can be traced back to previous times. We are also building a page that covers the chess terminlogy and its history and we hope to bring you this soon.
